While interning at JM Smucker in 2025, my manager passed along a news story that was bound to make big news in the networking world. Not only would it have a widespread impact, but it will likely impact the operations of JM Smucker and other companies using Aruba network devices in their topology.

What is the situation?

Juniper Networks, one of leading companies in AI and cloud-based networking, was acquired by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), with the acquisition officially being complete on July 2nd, 2025. With this merger, HPE is able to pool their resources into building out AI-native networks to be on the cutting edge.

Big move in AI networking

As someone who is familiar with the AI capabilities of Juniper MIST, this merger excites me. MIST has the power to detect network anomalies before an engineer knows it is a problem and make suggestions of how to correct, which makes MIST quite a tool in the engineer’s arsenal. With HPE now involved, new synergies can be formed across Juniper and HPE’s existing platforms to create more cohesive and comprehensive networks.

Possible concern of monopoly

There are concerns around the possibility of a monopoly, which led the US Department of Justice to launch an antitrust case against the merger. With this merger, there were concerns that the market share of the merger would be above the legally acceptable percentage of 30%.

Despite the 22-26% predicted market share being under this cap, the Antitrust Division sued to block the merger until a remedy was found. Ultimately settling, it was decided that HPE needed to divest of some of their notable asset and auction off Juniper’s AI Ops for Mist source code.

See HPE’s press release about the acquisition to get their take on the matter.
